What I Learned Replacing a Siemens 40 Amp Circuit Breaker and an AFE 31-10015 Air Filter
One Tuesday, the Power Went Out
At 2:40 in the afternoon on a Tuesday in March 2025, almost every screen on our floor went black. The network closet hummed, lights flickered, then silence. My first thought was about the outside transformer. My second thought was the Siemens main circuit breaker in the electrical panel near the loading dock—not because I knew anything about breakers, but because that was the only brand name I had ever noticed on the panel.

I found it online after typing the part number into three different search engines. I almost bought the cheapest result, but the vendor's cross-reference chart did not include AFE 31-10015. When I asked, they admitted they were not sure. So I ordered from a supplier that listed the exact part number in the product title. That extra five minutes probably saved me from installing the wrong filter twice.
The filter listing included exact dimensions and a MERV rating. I should have checked the dimensions before ordering, but the listing had them listed in the title. The surprise wasn't finding the filter. The surprise was installing it. The housing had a sensor wire clipped to the side of the filter slot. How to Install an Air Filter (Without Losing Your Sanity)
I watched a short manufacturer video and did the swap myself. To be clear, I replaced the air filter. I did not replace the circuit breaker. If you are not a licensed electrician, the filter is a reasonable DIY task; the breaker is not.
Here is the routine that worked for me:
- Turn off the air handler at the disconnect switch, not just the thermostat. Our unit had two switches, and I missed the second one at first.
- Open the access panel and find the filter rack. The old AFE 31-10015 air filter had arrows printed on the frame, so I noted which direction they pointed.
- Slide the old filter straight out. If it is stuck, the gasket is probably sealing against the channel.
- Vacuum the groove where the filter sits. Ours had collected about six months of dust and a paperclip.
- Check the sensor wire. In our unit, it ran across the top of the filter slot, so I tucked it back into its clip before inserting the new filter.
- Slide the new filter in with the arrows pointing in the same direction as the old one. That means toward the fan housing, not away from it.
- Close the panel, restore power, and verify that the airflow indicator resets. If your unit has a pressure switch like the one labeled TT Electronics plc, you may need to reset it or give the controller a minute to recalibrate.

For the filter, I should have asked the HVAC contractor to send a photo of the arrow direction instead of assuming all filters install the same way. The arrows exist for a reason. Would I buy a non-Siemens replacement breaker to save time? An informed customer is a calmer customer.
