I've Ordered Circuit Breakers for 5 Years—Cheap Ones Cost More Every Time

Another question that comes up: the Siemens 200 amp circuit breaker for a main panel. I'll see a good price on a Q2200 and think, "great, that's sorted." But again, the question isn't just the price of the breaker. It's whether the panel was designed for it, whether the bus rating matches, whether the interrupting rating fits your service.

I learned this during our 2024 vendor consolidation project. We have three locations, each with a different panel setup. One panel needed a 200 amp main, and the cheapest quote I got was for a universal replacement breaker that supposedly "fits most panels." It didn't fit ours. We found out on installation day. But I can count on the specifications being accurate, the UL listing being current, and the breaker seating correctly in the panel it was made for. That predictability is worth a modest markup. Is the breaker UL listed? Does it fit your panel? What happens if it fails—who comes back, and who pays? If you can't get straight answers, that's your answer. The cost just isn't visible yet. But it's coming.
