A VFD Replacement Made Me Respect Siemens Breaker Specifications (and My Own Limits)

In February 2024, I was standing in front of a dusty Siemens panel at a food processing plant, staring at a dead VFD. The line was down, the plant manager was already checking his watch, and I was pretty sure I knew exactly what to do.

The Call That Started It

While I was testing the drive, the plant manager said, “If we're doing this, change the input breaker too. It's been reset a dozen times.” I agreed. The VFD replacement itself was not the problem. But “probably” is not an electrical specification. If a short circuit had exceeded 10kA, the breaker might have opened—or it might have failed to clear the fault safely. That's not a nuisance trip; that's a safety issue.

What the Mistake Actually Cost

The wrong breaker itself was about $65. The Q250H cost a little more. The rush shipping was $94. But the real cost was the second trip to the plant and an extra day of downtime. Altogether, I'd estimate the mistake cost close to $800—and a very uncomfortable conversation with the plant manager.
